The money flying around at the top levels of world sport is enough to blow anyone’s mind. That’s why the net worth of NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes — the highest-paid sports star in history — is so especially stunning. You’d think that someone with so many millions in the bank could do literally anything, but you may be surprised by some of the ways that the Super Bowl star has chosen to spend it.
Joining the Kansas City Chiefs
The year 2017 saw Patrick Mahomes join the Kansas City Chiefs, who made things official with a four-year contract. This was worth $16.42 million, with Mahomes netting a $10 million bonus just for giving his signature. He didn't know it then, but it was this first contract that put him on the road to greatness. In 2018 he became the team’s starting quarterback. He also matched a record set by another iconic player — Tom Brady, no less — by starting the season with two consecutive Player of the Week awards.
But that's where the comparisons between Mahomes and Brady end. You see, back in 2020, Mahomes signed a contract that could eventually make him even more valuable than the G.O.A.T.
The History-Making Deal
Mahomes made history in July 2020 when he became the first athlete — from any sport — to sign a deal that was worth over half a billion dollars. Assuming that everything goes to plan, his ten-year extension with the Kansas City Chiefs will see him earn a staggering $503 million. It’s an eye-watering amount of money, but here’s the thing: nobody questioned it. Not the fans. Not NFL insiders. Nobody.
At the time, Mina Kimes of ESPNs Highly Questionable, said, “That’s what I love about this whole topic and story, is how unimpeachable Pat Mahomes is... Everybody agrees he’s the best.”
“Not Many People on the Planet Can Do What He Does”
According to former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Jason Bell, Mahomes is simply that special a player. In his BBC column, Bell wrote, “It’s supply and demand in its simplest form. There’s not many people on the planet that can do what he can, [who have] that kind of skill set. The quarterback position is the number-one position on the field in football... and he’s the best, so he sets the market.”
Indeed, Mahomes’ prodigious talent saw him win the NFL’s vaunted Most Valuable Player award in his very first season as a starting quarterback. He was off to a phenomenal start.
He’s Taken Over the NFL
Mahomes then won the Super Bowl in his second season — and he was voted the MVP of the game. Even though his talent was obvious, the enormous impact that he has made is still extremely rare. Commenting on just that point, Bell admitted, “I don't think anybody thought it would be like this and he’d take over the league the way he has.” Mahomes was taking the NFL by storm.
And Mahomes quickly became one of the most marketable players in the league. For instance, by 2021 he was behind only Tom Brady in terms of money made from outside endorsements.
Could He Best Brady?
Mahomes has paid his respects to older figures like Brady, though. “[Brady has] always been great and had a great season and found ways to get even better,” Mahomes told Sky Sports. “He’s done stuff off the field that hasn’t impacted him on the field, but still made his legacy even greater." Mahomes also described the experience of competing against Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as “a great opportunity."
It appears that Mahomes wants to keep going with pro football for as long as possible, just like Brady. And the way his career is going, he's sure to do just that — and he may even best Brady in some ways.
He Opened up About His Endorsements
You see, in 2021 alone he took home a heck of a chunk of change — no less than $20 million — while advertising brands such as BioSteel Sports, Adidas, and Oakley sunglasses. That's a staggering amount, and the dude's still in his 20s! Not long after signing his historic contract, Mahomes spoke with Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports. Kerr began by stating, “You’re the richest man in professional sports right now.”
He then asked, “Can you walk us through the contract negotiations with the Chiefs? Did things go as smoothly as they seemed?” Unsurprisingly, Mahomes was his usual calm and collected self when he responded.
Security for the Future of Mahomes’ Family
“They really did,” the superstar quarterback quickly confirmed. “The best thing that happened was the Chiefs and my team, we went in with an open mind. We tried to figure out what was not only best for me and my family, but also what was best for the team moving forward.” He then added, “Obviously, I’m very excited, very happy; having security for my family and security for future generations.”
Interestingly, Mahomes admitted he was a little surprised at the length of the deal the Chiefs were prepared to offer him. He revealed, “There were two things I said when we went into negotiations..."
“I Didn’t Even Know NFL Contracts Did That”
"I wanted to keep great players around me, and I wanted to have long-term security for my family. I certainly wasn’t thinking ten years. I didn’t even know NFL contracts did that.” Kerr then hit Mahomes with the question that many people must have had on the tips of their tongues: “Do you feel any pressure trying to live up to your contract?” Once again, though, Mahomes proved absolutely unflappable.
He answered, “Not necessarily. I’m going to go out there and be the best player and person I can be.” He then revealed that he saw something deeper in the deal.
An Impact on and off the Field
Mahomes went on, “Obviously, you want to win a lot of football games, but I feel if I not only make an impact on the football field but the Kansas City community for a long time — that will play out the contract and that will be what pays off.” At his core, Mahomes seemed to have the admirable goal of driving positive change for Kansas City and its residents.
Putting aside the subject of maturity, though, Kerr then asked what even more fans were dying to know — “What was the first thing you bought after you signed the contract?”
Buying a Stake in the Royals
Perhaps he was expecting Mahomes to reply with a laundry list of extravagant purchases. But yet again, the answer was more sensible and reasoned than anyone would usually expect from a 24-year-old! On July 28, 2020, a mere four days after the CBS Sports interview was published, Mahomes’ first major investment was announced. And it was quite something. The star quarterback had turned his attention to another sport close to his heart: baseball.
In fact he had purchased a stake in the Kansas City Royals. The shares made him part-owner of the team and the youngest owner in the long history of Major League Baseball.
Roots in the Kansas Community
In a heartfelt statement, Mahomes said, “I’m honored to become a part-owner of the Kansas City Royals. I love this city and the people of this great town. This opportunity allows me to deepen my roots in this community, which is something I’m excited to do.” CEO John Sherman added, “Consistent with the entirety of our ownership group, [Mahomes] has a deep commitment to Kansas City and a real passion for the game of baseball.”
And Sherman would point out that it was a passion that went all the way back to Mahomes' childhood. You see, Mahomes grew up around baseball just as much as football!
He Dad Was in the MLB
Mahomes’ father Pat was in fact a pitcher in Major League Baseball when his son was growing up. He separated from his wife, Patrick’s mother Randi, who raised the children. Despite this, his parents are reportedly on very good terms. Mahomes grew up watching his father endure the ups and downs of being a professional athlete. Mahomes’ father Pat pitched for six different teams across 11 seasons in the MLB.
Indeed, it had looked like his son was going to follow in his father’s footsteps. Patrick Mahomes played in the 2010 Junior League World Series and was picked as a pitcher in the MLB draft 37th round in 2014.
"It Just Makes Me Proud"
But Mahomes had another talent up his sleeve — football. And at that point in his young life, Mahomes was on the rise as a quarterback for Texas Tech. By 2016 he was devoting himself solely to American football. We think he made the right call! But did his professional baseball player father feel the same way? Pat Mahomes Sr. made his feelings known ahead of the 2023 Super Bowl. "I'm a big football fan, always have been," he said.
"For Patrick and Jalen [Hurts] to be a part of first two [Black starting quarterbacks] to play in a Super Bowl just shows how far we've come... it just makes me so proud," Pat Mahomes Sr. said.
From MLB to NFL
Clearly, the senior Mahomes has no problem with his son playing professional football. Good thing, since it wasn't long into Mahomes' college career that the NFL Draft beckoned. Mahomes had a pro day at university and no fewer than 28 teams showed up from the NFL, making him one of the most-wanted prospective players in football at the time. Mahomes credits playing a range of sports with helping him to become the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback.
Mahomes' time spent watching his father play baseball no doubt inspired him in his pursuit of sports. And owning a piece of the Royals likely meant a lot to Mahomes’ family.
His Dad's Curious Text
And somehow, Mahomes still seems to be grounded about his success. He once revealed, “My dad texted me a couple days after the contract — ‘Do you feel any different?’ I said I feel exactly the same. I’m going to be the same person I was before I got the contract and before I got to the NFL — to be the best Patrick Mahomes I can be every single day.”
To his credit, Mahomes really did carry this sincere approach into his subsequent purchases and investments, no doubt making his father and the rest of his family proud in the process. One of his other investments also kept that sports/family link strong.
His Wife's Busy Career
You see, just as Mahomes’ star has risen, his partner Brittany also looks to have a bright future ahead of her. Not long after Mahomes had bought into the Royals, his wife Brittany Matthews launched her own part-ownership bid with the Kansas City Current women’s soccer team. She helps run the soccer team, and also works as a high-profile personal trainer. Then, in January 2023, Mahomes joined his wife, entering into part-ownership.
On Instagram, Mahomes posted, “I am thankful for the chance to join Brittany as part of the Kansas City Current’s ownership team." Once again, the choice of sport was sentimental to the Mahomes family.
Brittany Mahomes Was a Soccer Star in Iceland
That’s right — Matthews was once a professional soccer player! After playing at college level for University of Texas-Tyler, she actually traveled to Iceland to play one season for UMF Afturelding. She even won the Icelandic championship! When the opportunity came up in Kansas City to get involved once again in the game that she loves, she — and her hubby — jumped at the chance. It was a no-brainer.
After all, the couple have been supporting each other since they were teenagers! Mahomes and Matthews met in high school, and their relationship is still going strong. They tied the knot in March 2022.
"Marrying Your Best Friend"
"Marrying your best friend [is] one of the greatest things you could do!" Brittany Mahomes wrote in an Instagram post honoring their one-year wedding anniversary. "Nothing beats doing life with you and these beautiful kiddos of ours. Year 1 was wild but we got many more to go." Patrick Mahomes also shared his love on Instagram with a photo of the couple on their wedding day and a cute heart emoji.
Obviously, the couple are determined to support one another through thick and thin! Thankfully, though, things have seemed to be smooth sailing for the family, if Mahomes' investments are any indication.
What About Whataburger?
Although he has spent his millions on his family in recent years — we'll get to that in a minute — he has also spent some of his dough on his own passions. In a super-relatable move, he chose to put his money into a group bringing his favorite Texan fast-food chain Whataburger to Kansas and Missouri! After all, as he told ESPN, “I love Kansas City, and I love Whataburger.”
“I’m excited to help bring a gift from my first home to my second home,” Mahomes explained. Fast food aside, Mahomes has also had more complex business ventures on his mind.
His Major Tech Investments
Back in 2020 he invested in Hyperice, a sports recovery technology company. Its main product — the Hypervolt massager — uses vibration and heat to soothe aching muscles. Mahomes said, “I’ve used Hyperice throughout my career as an instrumental part of my overall training and recovery routines to ensure I’m performing at my peak on game day.” Another company that got Mahomes’ dollar is Whoop, which makes wearable fitness trackers.
Mahomes invested during a $100 million financing round in 2020 — a round which saw the company valued at $1.2 billion. He even appeared on the firm’s official podcast to wax lyrical about the product!
Mahomes Has an Enviable Car Collection
Naturally, Mahomes doesn’t just invest his money sensibly — he also blows it on fun stuff! For starters, he has a car collection that would make many motor enthusiasts weep with jealousy. He owns a $338,000 Ferrari 812 Superfast, a $335,000 Rolls Royce Cullinan, and he also splashed out on a $222,000 Lamborghini Urus as an engagement gift for Matthews. In any case, the value of such exotic cars may well appreciate over time, too.
The proud son also splurged on a car for his father’s 50th birthday back in 2020. He got his dad a brand-new gleaming black Cadillac Escalade, no less! How's that for giving back?
Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars
Mahomes is also a man with a taste for fine timepieces, as his extensive watch collection definitively proves. He has been pictured wearing the Rolex Daytona “Rainbow,” which will set you back a cool $520,000. Most of his other watches are more reasonably priced, though — just the small matter of $45,000 for a Rolex Yacht-Master or a mere $36,000 for a solid-gold Omega Seamaster. That's a serious chunk of change!
Of course, even more important than Mahomes' watches, cars, and fitness products is the place where he stores all of those things — his home! But if you assumed that his home would be the height of luxury, you'd be mistaken.
Not Exactly a Mansion
The NFL hotshot’s house is actually surprisingly low-key. The 1950s ranch in the suburbs of Kansas City is reportedly worth $2 million. Expensive? Sure, but not exactly the typical home for a famous pro quarterback. The place was built in 1953 with Mahomes and partner Brittany Matthews moving in back in February 2019. Between then and now, the couple had a baby girl in 2021, and then a son in 2022.
Three-plus years and one pandemic later, and the little family unit have turned it into a true home. They're not exactly "living it large," however, despite what you might imagine.
Lots of Reasons to Celebrate
The modest ranch was bought the year before Mahomes drove the crowds wild at the 2020 Super Bowl. The Chiefs hadn’t played in a Super Bowl for half a century, but thanks in no small part to the quarterback’s leadership, they sent the San Francisco 49ers packing and touched down with the title. Through this staggering achievement, Mahomes became the youngest quarterback of color to be named the Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Mahomes was given his coveted Super Bowl ring in September of that year and proposed to Matthews the same day. So within a couple of years of moving in, their ranch must have seen a lot of celebrating!
Impressive Square Footage
The property, which is near the Country Club District, is billed as being in the heart of Kansas City. Overall, Mahomes’ home covers 1.4 acres, with the house itself occupying 4,343 square feet. If that sounds on the grand side, the news is tempered by the fact the house has an intriguingly small number of bedrooms… three! If the young family gets any bigger, they may have to think about upgrading houses, or at least adding another room or two to the ranch.
The house also has just two bathrooms and an ensuite. This may sound luxurious to the rest of us, but for the top football player in the league, it's definitely unusual!
Kansas City Is Close to Their Heart
Was Mahomes cutting corners with half a bathroom? We’re kidding, of course. For this star player, being in Missouri is a no-brainer. “Setting down roots in Kansas City was huge for us,” he told the Bleacher Report website in 2019. He spoke in glowing terms about the locals, adding, “They treat us, I mean, just like we’ve been here our whole entire life.” It sounds like the Mahomes had found the perfect neighborhood.
And as one of the most famous football players in the country, we're sure Mahomes appreciates a quiet, peaceful home to return to, especially one with friendly neighbors. It also helps that the house is mere minutes away from his day job.
A Mix of Extravagance and Practicality
The spacious property is just a few miles from GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, where the star plays his home games. From the outside, the eye-catching home of Mahomes looks nice but far from palatial with its clapboard facade. What about when you venture inside the ranch, though? Do we see any signs of wild extravagance, or is it all fairly humble and straightforward? Well, you might just be surprised.
Despite their young ages and hefty paychecks, Mahomes and Matthews have stuck to a pretty modest budget the past few years. So when you look inside their home, the first thing you'd notice is a healthy mix of extravagance and practicality.
From Renting to Owning
Overall, the house is described as having an open floor plan, with hardwood floors and windows that stretch from floor to ceiling, allowing in a maximum amount of light. These windows could also lead to some awkward moments with the neighbors, but the couple's spacious property should prevent that from happening. Adding to the cozy feel of the home are the fireplaces located all around the property, including in the bedroom.
Before this, the couple rented — just like many other people — and they reportedly stayed with Brittany’s father. So the house was an important step forward for them in their lives.
Mid-Century Modern Vibes
Because of the house’s ’50s roots, Mahomes lives in what could be described as a retro environment. Attention has been paid to the main living area and its stone fireplace, which has been described as referencing Art Deco styling. Not what you’d expect when entering the home of a 21st-century NFL player, perhaps? He has also installed some modern details, such as the artwork of the kid with tattoos on the mantle.
These modern touches definitely make the room pop, and infuses it with Mahomes' personality. In fact, behind every door of the ranch house is evidence of Mahomes and Matthews' unique vision.
The Mahomes’ Open-Concept Kitchen
When either of the couple need a sandwich, or whatever the healthier alternative is, they head to the kitchen. This is a chef’s kitchen, by which we mean a professional caterer could rock up and immediately feel at home. Whether the couple employ one to make their meals, we don’t know. It seems unlikely, bearing in mind their independent approach to life. This is where the open floor plan comes in handy!
The couple and their two kids can be spread out throughout the kitchen and living room while still being in earshot of each other. Parents, you know how important this is!
The Bedroom Is Basically an Apartment
In the couple's bedroom, there’s a lot more space than in other homes. It’s here where you start to appreciate the couple’s sizable bank balance. The room covers about 1,250 square feet and has a walk-in closet. The room also has a bathroom, laundry room, and exercise room. It's basically its own apartment, and a luxurious one at that. Of course, the couple also have closets the size of which would make even King Charles' head spin.
Here, Patrick keeps all of his clothes and shoes. Well, maybe not his shoes, actually. You see, he has dedicated an entirely separate room to the function of storing his footwear.
Enter the Shoe Museum
Cameras have been allowed inside this dedicated space for an up-close look at Mahomes’ pride and joy — leaving aside his children, of course. There isn’t a whole lot that seems indulgent about this man, but we can definitely see him showing off his passion for high-end footwear here. And the room actually feels more like a museum for shoes than a closet. Clearly, this is something that Patrick is very happy to show off.
With special lighting to bring out the best in each pair, it’s a fun area of the house, and one he appears to take very seriously, indeed, judging by his elaborate security measures.
Maximum Security Footwear
Apparently, Mahomes has 180 pairs of shoes, meaning that he has the potential to put on a different set of shoes every other day of the year. But Mahomes follows his nose, though. We don’t mean any smell from the shoes, but his instincts when it comes to security in the shoe room. Cameras are installed so that he can keep an eye out for anyone wanting to “borrow” a pair.
So if you somehow find yourself in Mahomes' neighborhood, don't even think about sneaking in for a peek at his massive shoe collection. After all, there is so much more of the house to explore!
It’s a Dog’s Life
And the Mahomes are experiencing the joys of parenting as they welcome younger family members into the home. And that's not all. They also have close encounters of the canine kind, courtesy of their two dogs, a pitbull named Steel and a cane corso named Silver. It perhaps comes as no surprise to hear that these two pampered pooches are popular enough to warrant their own social media presence online.
And since the pups are essential members of the Mahomes family, it shouldn't come as a surprise that a few parts of the house look like something out of doggy heaven.
The Dog-Friendly Garden
One place Steel and Silver must love to be is outside: there’s plenty of space to run around in! In fact, there's enough grass and fresh air to make any dog perfectly content. There's something for humans, too: The house also has a rose garden, as well as a private pool and landscaping. It’s a safe bet that Mahomes works on his throws in the garden — practice makes perfect!
His aim is accurate enough to take out a drone, as a video stunt proved. The garden also seems like the ideal place to sit back, relax, and put the pressures of being a pro-football star behind you.
A Home Designed for the Mahomes
In addition to the lavish and not-so-lavish details, the couple also have a gym, as you might expect from two people who have built their lives around sports and fitness. But imagine not having to share exercise equipment with sweaty strangers?! We're jealous! There’s also a wine cellar with room for 500 bottles; a wet bar; and a corner office for Brittany. To be clear, the couple did sink some money into adding these unique touches to their home.
In fact, the pair extensively renovated the property to the tune of some $400,000. That's a pretty significant amount, but we’re thinking that it’s probably a minor investment compared to the spending of many of Mahomes’ peers.
What’s the Future?
Now that we know how the Mahomes sank hundreds of thousands of dollars into their cozy ranch house, we can't help but ask, "Is this ranch the young family’s forever home?" For most of us, that kind of investment would be the purchase of a lifetime. But Patrick Mahomes isn't just anyone. In fact, Mahomes has a dream to build his own house on land he’s purchased. This will feature half of a full-sized football field, plus a basketball court.
The quarterback may be known as a wizard of American football but he also plays basketball and baseball. He dreams big, so the ranch house may not be his forever home.
The Power Couple's Dreams
Whether they stay where they are or embark on another property-related journey via an epic house build, the Mahomes have no shortage of money and security to fall back on. Between Mahomes’ lucrative sponsorship deals and Brittany’s business savvy, they are a notable success story who have kept their feet on the ground on the way to fame and fortune. And yet, as Mahomes grows as a quarterback and MVP, there's no telling where his career will take him.
Indeed, the couple may not only outgrow their modest ranch house but their next mansion, as well. And to think: they started out by living back in Brittany's father's house!
